Robert Paul Melvin who was born on October 28, 1961, is the manager of the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball. He was a former professional baseball player and coach in the United States (MLB). Three times he has been named Manager of the Year.
Melvin was an infielder for the following teams; Tigers, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Chicago White Sox during a 10-year playing career from 1985 to 1994. He was drafted in the first round (2nd pick) in the second phase of the 1981 draft by the Detroit Tigers.
Melvin grew up in Menlo Park, California, after being birthed in Palo Alto, California, to Judy and Paul Melvin. He was born to a Jewish mother and a Catholic father and is Jewish. He was one of just eight Jewish managers in the history of Major League Baseball until 2021.
Gabe Kapler, Brad Ausmus, Jeff Newman, Norm Sherry, Lefty Phillips, Lou Boudreau, and Lipman Pike were among the others in attendance. R.B. “Bud” Levitas, Melvin’s grandfather, worked for the Acme Packers as a ballboy in the 1920s.
