Pivetta was born in the Canadian city of Victoria. In Saanich, British Columbia, he attended Lambrick Park Secondary School.

He was a member of the Victoria Eagles of the British Columbia Premier Baseball League’s youth division and the Victoria HarbourCats of the West Coast League’s collegiate summer division.

Pivetta’s repertoire includes a four-seam fastball, curveball, slider, and changeup. His fastball, which averages 96 mph (154 km/h), and his two breaking balls are his main weapons.
