The luxury tax rates for 2022 are yet to be determined. The three luxury tax lines were increased by $2 million per year in the Collective Bargaining Agreement that ran from December 1, 2017, to December 1, 2021. If approved, a new CBA could drastically alter the luxury tax process.

The average annual value (AAV) of guaranteed contracts is taken into account, not the amount the player is paid that year. Due to the payment structure, the AAV of contracts with deferrals is lower.

It is based on the inflation rate indicated in the contract, but since this varies from contract to contract, the AAV is computed as it would be without deferrals. Other payments are included, such as money to and from other teams. Contract option buyouts are not included.
