Javon Alexander Mack (born November 19, 1985) is an American football center for the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers. He was picked 21st overall in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns after playing collegiate football for the University of California.
While at the University of California, Berkeley, Mack was a member of the Golden Bears football team. He started 39 games in a row for the Golden Bears, accumulating 256 important blocks/knockdowns, 32 touchdown-resulting blocks, and 29 downfield blocks. Mack earned a 3.61 undergraduate GPA as a legal studies student at the University of California, Berkeley.
He graduated in 2008 and played as a graduate student in education for the 2008 season.
In 2008, he was awarded the Draddy Trophy, popularly known as the “academic Heisman,” for his academic achievements, becoming the first Cal player and the second consecutive center to do so, following Texas’ Dallas Griffin.
He also earned the Morris Trophy in 2007 and 2008, making him the third offensive lineman to win the honor twice, and the first since Washington’s Lincoln Kennedy in 1991 and 1992. Mack also played in the 2009 Senior Bowl for Cal.
Mack was the highest-ranked center available in the 2009 NFL Draft, with Sports Illustrated projecting him as a first- or second-round pick. The Cleveland Browns selected him with the 21st overall pick. Since Tarik Glenn in 1997, he was the first Golden Bears offensive lineman to be taken in the first round.
