The Oriole Park at Camden Yards, sometimes known as Oriole Park or Camden Yards, is a Major League Baseball (MLB) stadium in Baltimore, Maryland. It is the first of the “retro” big league ballparks built in the 1990s and early 2000s, and it is a sanctuary to the Baltimore Orioles. It was built to replace Memorial Stadium in 1992.
The Camden Yards Sports Complex is located in downtown Baltimore, a few blocks west of the Inner Harbor.
Construction started in 1989 and took 33 months to complete. Previous Orioles owner Eli Jacobs preferred the name, Oriole Park, while former Maryland Governor William Donald Schaefer preferred Camden Yards. After much deliberation, a compromise was achieved, and it was decided to use both names.
Baltimore Orioles Stadium Owners
The stadium is owned by Maryland Stadium Authority.
Chapter 283, Acts of the Maryland General Assembly of 1986 established the Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA). The organization’s initial goal was to bring the National Football League (NFL) back to Baltimore. After former Baltimore Colts owner Robert Irsay relocated the Colts out of the city in the middle of a wintry night on March 29, 1984, Maryland needed a new football club.
