One of the six divisions in Major League Baseball is the National League East. Another division with every member winning at least one World Series championship is the American League Central.
Two expansion teams joined the National League (along with the American League) in 1969, resulting in the creation of the East and West divisions.
The Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds, both in the Eastern Time Zone, shared a division with teams on the West Coast. These two teams refused to approve expansion until they were assured that they would remain in the newly formed East division together, which was the result of their demands.
It was initially planned that the Pittsburgh Pirates would remain in the Eastern Division while the Atlanta Braves would be relocated to the newly formed National League Central during the 1994 division realignment. The Braves, on the other hand, wanted to create a natural rivalry with the Florida Marlins, thus they chose the East division.
However, despite the Marlins’ offer of moving to the Central Division, the Pirates opted to hand the Braves their berth in the East Division instead. As a result, the Pirates have made repeated unsuccessful bids in recent years to return to the East Division.
