Mike Matheny is a former baseball player who is currently a manager of the Kansas City Royals, a professional American baseball team in the Major League Baseball (MLB). Before becoming a baseball manager, Mike played for 13 seasons as a catcher for the Milwaukee Brewers, Toronto Blue Jays, St. Louis Cardinals, and San Francisco Giants – he led his clubs to numerous victories in his playing career.

As a manager, Mike’s team won one National League (NL) flag and three NL Central division titles. He bats and tosses right-gave stand 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 m) tall and gauge 205 pounds (93 kg).

Mike grew up in a Christian home attending a local Baptist church regularly. His father, Jerry Matheny, worked as a heavy equipment construction worker and Matheny’s mother, Judy Matheny, was a Baptist missionary association staff. Mike was very passionate about sport, the reason he got a strong interest in baseball. He captained the baseball and football teams in Reynoldsburg High School. In 1988, just after completing high school, he got drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays – he got a special deal reserved for second-round picks.

Mike Matheny Professional Career

Milwaukee Brewers selected Mike Matheny in the 1991 Major League Baseball Draft where he played three years in the minor league before making his MLB debut on April 7, 1994. The Toronto Blue Jays signed him on December 23, 1998, where he played for a season before joining St. Louis Cardinals in 1999. Matheny was an excellent defensive catcher and helped the Cardinals to win many competitions. Mike Matheny resigned from the MLB career with a .239 batting average, 67 home runs, and 443 RBI.

Mike Matheny Managerial Career

The St. Louis Cardinals organization appointed Mike Matheny as special adviser for the team on January 24, 2008. He was later promoted to the position of a new manager on November 14, 2011, following Tony La Russa’s retirement. He won in his managerial debut against the Miami Marlins in April 2012. Due to his superb performance, his contract was extended to 2022 after he recorded his 400th career win in 2016. Unfortunately for him, he was laid off from his position on July 14, 2018.

On October 31, 2019, Matheny was hired as manager of the Kansas City Royals after the retirement of Ned Yost.
