To think that the Yankees baseball cap was once simply another piece of the Yankees uniform is a bit of an oddity. It had a dual purpose: it protected players’ eyes from the sun, kept sweat off their brows, and displayed their team colors. However, it was not a fashion statement.

Nevertheless, the New York Yankees cap has now become a fashion staple. The famous baseball cap is known by everyone, including sports, actresses, and artists, as well as your parents, friends, and children. Iconic status for the cap has just been achieved, as one of the exhibit’s first-ever objects.

Founded in the 1920s, New Era has been making Major League Baseball hats since 1954, when it introduced its trademark 59Fifty hat and became the official on-field cap for every MLB team in 1993. When Spike Lee requested a Yankees cap in 1996, he wanted one that was not made of the team’s trademark navy wool. Chris Koch, CEO of New Era, recalls that Spike Lee requested a red version of the company’s Yankees baseball cap back in 1996. As a result, our business’s fashion and street culture divisions were born at that time.

Before Spike’s request, caps were only available in their team’s colors. It was navy blue wool with a white Yankees logo on a New Era Yankees hat. The same cap, however, when produced in a custom color, opened up a whole new universe of possibilities for the company—and for fashion.
