Manager of the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball Robert Paul Melvin who was born on October 28, 1961, is a former professional baseball player and coach from the United States. Three times he has been recognized as Manager of the Year.
As a child, Melvin was raised by Judy and Paul Melvin in Menlo Park, California, where he attended Menlo Park High School. He was born to a Jewish mother and a Catholic father and is therefore of Jewish descent. One of just eight Jewish managers in Major League Baseball’s history.
From 1985 to 1994, Melvin was a catcher with the Detroit Tigers, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Chicago White Sox. He was drafted in the first round of the 1981 draft by the Tigers in the second phase.
The Seattle Mariners (2003–04), Arizona Diamondbacks (2005–09), and Oakland Athletics (2011–2021) have all been under Melvin’s management. It was in 2007 when Melvin was voted National League Manager of the Year, and it was once again in 2018 that he was chosen American League Manager of the Year (becoming the eighth manager ever to win the award at least three times).
