In contemporary American baseball history, the 1988 Baltimore Orioles experienced the poorest start to a season. Only five seasons after winning the World Series, the Orioles placed seventh in the American League East, with a record of 54 wins and 107 losses.
The 0–21 start to the season, which ran from April 4th to April 28th, is the season’s highlight. After a 0–6 start, manager Cal Ripken, Sr. was fired for incompetence and replaced by Hall of Famer Frank Robinson. On April 29, the Orioles defeated the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park in their first game of the season.
On April 29, the Orioles beat the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park in their first game of the season. During the season, the only really runs allowed was 15 in a game on June 19, while the most goals scored was 12 in a game on May 31. Edward Bennett Williams, the owner of the Baltimore Orioles, passed away in August of that year.
The Orioles had only lost 100 games twice before (the other being in 1954), and the 107 losses would not be exceeded until 30 years later. Only 1939 (43–111), 2018 (47–115), 2021 (52-110), and 2019 (54–108) had a worse overall franchise record.
