The Houston Astros are a major league baseball club in the United States with their home base in the city.
While the Astros had played their first 51 seasons in the National League, they are now a member club of the American League (AL) West, where they participate in Major League Baseball (MLB) (NL).
In 1962, the Houston Colt.45s and the New York Mets were both added to the National League as expansion teams.
They changed the name three years later when they moved into Astrodome the first domed sports stadium and so-called “Eighth Wonder of the World” and chose the present moniker, reflecting Houston’s status as the host of Johnson Space Center.
Minute Maid Park, the current home of the Houston Astros was completed in 2000. From 1969 until 1993, the Astros belonged to the NL West, then the NL Central, before being relocated to the AL West in 2013 as part of a minor realignment.
