Dan Dickerson, a 21-year veteran of the Michigan sports broadcast booth and the Tigers’ principal play-by-play voice, returns for his 18th season in the booth. Dan joined the Tigers in 2000 as a commentator alongside Ernie Harwell, who is now a Hall of Famer.

Daniel Hill Dickerson, an American sports reporter, is known best for his current role as the principal radio play-by-play voice of Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers on the Detroit Tigers Radio Network. He was born on November 13, 1958.

Dickerson is the son of James Preston Dickerson (1926–2000) and Rosemary Dickerson and grew up in Birmingham, Michigan. In 1981, Ronald Reagan appointed James as the special assistant to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, a political science professor at Oakland Community College.

He got his start in radio as a news anchor and reporter at WMAX in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In addition to football and basketball, he covered high school sports. In 1982, he went to WCUZ, a competitor, and spent the following six years covering sports. Dickerson joined WWJ in Detroit in 1988 as a general assignment reporter and weekend news and sports pillar.

“Way back and gone!” Dickerson’s standard home run call. He typically exclaims, “Watch that fly!” when Tigers hit huge home runs. “Swing and a miss—he got ‘im on strikes!” Dickerson usually says after a strikeout.
