Broadcasters of the Royals Denny Matthews has been calling Royals games since the club’s foundation in 1969, and he is in his 53rd season.
Dennis G. “Denny” Matthews who was born on November 14, 1942 is an American sportscaster who has worked as a play-by-play announcer for the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball since the team’s founding in 1969.
Matthews was born and raised in Bloomington, Illinois, and attended Illinois Wesleyan University, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and played baseball and football. Prior to joining the Royals, he worked for local radio and TV stations in Peoria and St. Louis.
Matthews has been a broadcaster for the Royals since 1969, when he was Bud Blattner’s sidekick. Since Blattner’s retirement in 1974, Matthews has been the Royals’ primary broadcaster. Matthews was teamed with Fred White from 1974 through 1998, a period that included some of the Royals’ best seasons.
When Davis moved his attention to broadcasting Jayhawks football games, Matthews took over the majority of the home schedule and much of the September slate. In 2009, Steve Physioc took over as the Royals’ broadcaster.
Matthews is a well-known character in Kansas City thanks to his broadcasts and extended tenure.
