Prior to joining the Rays, he worked as a play-by-play announcer for three years for a variety of ESPN sports broadcasts. From 1977 to 1984, he was the Astros’ radio and TV play-by-play announcer, and from 1985 to 1989, he was the Cubs’. From 1990 to 1994, he was the Yankees’ lead play-by-play announcer, and in 1994 and 1995, he worked for The Baseball Network (ABC/NBC).
Dewayne began his baseball career as the Oklahoma City 89ers’ radio announcer (1973-74). In 1975-76, he was the sports director at KPLR TV in St. Louis, where he was nominated for an Emmy. In 2018, Dewayne was inducted into the Tampa Bay Sports Club Hall of Fame.
Through their 501(c)(3) charity W.A.R., he and his wife Carla support a variety of causes, including military combat veterans (Warriors at Rest). He has two daughters, Stephanie Wheeler and Alexandra, as well as three grandchildren, Gabriel (age 16), Zachary (age 13), and Evie (age 10).
