The Twin Cities area, which includes the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, is the inspiration for the team’s name.
Most Famous Minnesota Twins Player?
Meet Joseph Patrick Mauer, an American former baseball pitcher, starting pitcher, and the first baseman who spent his entire 15-year MLB career with the Minnesota Twins was born on April 19, 1983. Mauer, a six-time All-Star, is the only catcher in Major League Baseball history to win three batting titles, and the only catcher in the American League to ever win a batting title (AL).
He also earned three Gold Glove Awards in a row (2008–2010), five Silver Slugger Awards (including three in a row), and the 2009 American League MVP Award. He is the most recent catcher in the American League to win (or even finish in the top three in votes) the MVP award as of 2020.
Mauer had lengthy sideburns throughout his major league career, and the Twins honored him with “Joe Mauer Sideburns Night” on August 10, 2006. To emulate Mauer’s signature look, the first 10,000 supporters were given synthetic sideburns with double-sided tape.
