The Orioles traded Britton to the New York Yankees on July 24th, 2018 for Dillon Tate, Cody Carroll, and Josh Rogers, all prospects of the Baltimore organization. In his final season with the Yankees, Britton had a 2.88 earned run average in 25 starts.
From 2016 through 2018, he had the lowest earned run average (ERA) of any big league pitcher with at least 100 innings pitched.
On January 11, 2019, the Yankees signed Britton to a three-year contract with an option for a fourth year.
He had a 1.89 ERA in 2020, going 1-2 with eight saves. The Yankees exercised Britton’s 2022 $14 million option on October 29.
Britton began to have elbow pain in the middle of Spring Training in 2021, and an MRI revealed a bone chip in his left elbow, necessitating arthroscopic surgery and a 3-4 month recovery period.
Britton was put on the 60-day injured list on March 31, 2021. When Britton was reactivated on June 12, he had been on the disabled list since April.
During the Field of Dreams game in Dyersville, Iowa, Britton was the first pitcher to lose. Because Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman was out with an injury, Britton stepped in to get the save after the Yankees rallied from a 7-4 deficit in the top of the ninth with home runs by Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton to go up 8-7.
When Danny Mendick grounded out, Britton made it through the first two innings of the game without allowing a run to score.
After Britton intentionally walked Seby Zavala, the White Sox were able to score a run on the first ball Tim Anderson saw from him, giving them a 9-8 victory.
After Tommy John surgery and the removal of bone chips from his pitching elbow on September 9, 2021, Britton is expected to return to the field.
