Meet Andrzej Duda President of the Republic of Poland
Andrzej Sebastian Duda is a lawyer and politician from Poland who has been the country’s President since 2015. From 2011 to 2014, he was a member of the Sejm, and from 2014 to 2015, he was a member of the European Parliament.
During the 2015 presidential election, Duda ran as a presidential candidate for the Law and Justice (PiS) party.
Duda received 5,179,092 votes in the first round of voting, accounting for 34.76 percent of all valid votes.
He got 51.55 percent of the vote in the second round of voting, defeating incumbent President Bronisaw Komorowski, who received 48.45 percent of the vote.
Duda resigned as president-elect of the European Parliament and his party membership on May 26, 2015.
Prior to his re-election campaign in 2020, he obtained an official PiS endorsement on October 24, 2019.
He won the first round and subsequently the runoff with 10,440,648 votes, or 51.03 percent of the vote, defeating Rafa Trzaskowski.
Duda entered politics in the early 2000s with the now-defunct Freedom Union Party. He joined the Law and Justice Party after the 2005 legislative elections (PiS).
Duda served as an undersecretary of state in the Ministry of Justice from 2006 until 2007. Duda then served on the Polish State Tribunal from 2007 to 2008.
Agata Kornhauser-Duda, a German teacher at Kraków’s Jan III Sobieski High School, is Duda’s spouse. When they were both in high school, they met at a party.
Since December 21, 1994, the couple has been together. Kinga, their 1995-born child, is their only child. Duda will appoint her as a social adviser starting in September 2020.
