NATO banned together after WWII in 1949. In short, the goal of NATO was to deter Soviet expansionism through a strong North American appearance with Europe, and encouraging political integration between European countries, according to NATO.

Each member nation is represented on the North Atlantic Council by an Ambassador or Permanent Representative supported by a national delegation composed of advisers and officials who represent their country on different NATO committees.

The Council also meets from time to time at the level of Heads of State and Heads of Government or Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Ministers of Defence.

Is Russia part of NATO?

Russia is not a member of NATO. The Russia-NATO Council was established in 2002 to handle security issues and joint projects.

Relations between the NATO military alliance and the Russian Federation were established in 1991 within the framework of the North Atlantic Cooperation Council.

In 1994, Russia joined the Partnership for Peace program, and since that time, NATO and Russia have signed several important agreements on cooperation.

Is NATO an Army?

NATO has access to about 40,000 troops in its NATO Response Force but so far has not activated that group. About 5,000 of those troops have been placed on heightened alert.

Some of the organization’s members have been supplying arms and equipment to Ukraine, but NATO isn’t taking similar action itself.

The Alliance counts on the military might of its 30 Allied and partner nations to support missions and operations around the world.
