Ex-President of Bangladesh, Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed was born in the hamlet of Pemal in the Netrakona district’s Kendua thana on February 1, 1930.

Talukdar Resat Ahmed Bhuiyan, his father, was a philanthropist and a well-known social worker.

Shahabuddin Ahmed graduated from Dhaka University in 1951 with a BA (Hons) in Economics and an MA in International Relations in 1952.

He joined the Pakistan Civil Service (CSP) in 1954 after passing a competitive test, underwent training at the Lahore Civil Service Academy, and studied public administration at the University of Oxford.

Shahabuddin Ahmed was appointed to the position of extra deputy commissioner after working as a magistrate and then as a sub-divisional officer in Gopalganj and Natore.

In June 1960, he was reassigned to the judicial department, concluding his career in the executive arm of government.

Ahmed was elected to the presidency without opposition on July 23, 1996, after the Awami League administration nominated him, and he was sworn in on October 9, 1996.

On November 14, 2001, he left his position. He was labeled a “betrayer” by Sheikh Hasina after the Awami League lost the Parliamentary Elections in 2001.

After the Awami League lost the legislative election in 2001, he parted out with them. In the same year, Ahmed stepped down as president.
