Will Ukraine Ever Join Nato?

Ukraine will not join NATO.

On a day when Kyiv was battered by Russian shells and missiles and the invading force tightened its grip on the capital, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, acknowledged that Ukraine will not join Nato.

At least five people were killed in the latest artillery onslaught on Kyiv, forcing the city hall to declare a 35-hour curfew beginning Tuesday night, amid concerns that the Russian campaign’s focus has moved to the destruction of civilian infrastructure and residential areas.

While speaking to leaders of the new Joint Expeditionary Force, a UK-led project bringing together ten north Atlantic countries to establish a capability for responding quickly to emergencies, Zelenskiy made his statements about Nato.

“It is evident that Ukraine is not a Nato member; we recognize this,” Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko stated.

“We’ve heard about the ostensibly open door for years, but we’ve also heard that we won’t go through, and these are facts that must be accepted.”

What is Nato and What do They Do?

NATO is a security alliance made up of 30 countries from North America and Europe that was formed in 1949 with the signing of the Washington Treaty. NATO’s primary purpose is to protect the Allies’ liberty and security through political and military methods.

The organization’s goal is to provide member states with collective security.

This means that if a member state is threatened by an external country, the member states will respond with mutual defense.
