On the first day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russian ships attacked Snake Island in Ukrainian territorial seas in the Black Sea at around 18:00 local time, according to the Ukrainian State Border Guards.
There were two ships participating in the attack, both of which used their deck guns.
According to audio shared by Ukrayinska Pravda,
A group of Ukrainian border guards were stationed on Snake Island, in the Black Sea south of Odessa, when a Russian warship ordered them to surrender under threat of attack. Their response: “Russian warship, go fuck yourself.” They held their ground. All 13 were killed.
Following a naval and air assault, Russian forces took the island at 22:00 (01:00 Moscow Time, UTC+2), according to the State Border Guard Service, which said later that night that communication with the island had been lost.
When the Russian cruiser opened fire, one of the Ukrainian soldiers broadcast the event live on social media.
