Monkeypox is a viral disease caused by contact with an infected animal or person. While it typically isn’t fatal for humans, it can cause serious illness in those who contract it.
Anyone can get monkeypox if they come into contact with someone who has contracted it; while there are some preventative measures you can take to lessen your chances of contracting it, once you have monkeypox you cannot be cured.
The only way to avoid getting it is to not come into contact with anyone who has it. It spreads quickly from person to person and symptoms include fever, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, backaches, chills, and fatigue.
It usually lasts about 10 days but can last as long as 30 days.
You should seek medical attention immediately if you think you might have monkeypox; antiviral drugs may help reduce symptoms but will not cure you of it.
People with weakened immune systems (like people on chemotherapy) are at higher risk for developing severe cases of monkeypox that may require hospitalization.
You may also want to speak with your doctor about taking antibiotics before being exposed to someone who has been exposed to someone who has contracted monkeypox—this may lower your chances of contracting it yourself.
